TRIATHLON BC CELEBRATES SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTORS
the evening of September 10, Triathlon BC hosted its Annual Athlete
Gala. Held at the Creekside Community
Centre, the Gala celebrated the achievements and dedication of its members;
current and past athletes, race directors, coaches, officials, clubs,
volunteers and supporters. In addition to a keynote presentation from Challenge
Penticton Champion, Jeffrey Symonds (Get Ugly!), Triathlon BC also presented awards to significant
individuals who have helped to weave the fabric of the triathlon community

TRIATHLON CANADA CROWNS NATIONAL JUNIOR SERIES CHAMPIONS
After four stops across Canada, Triathlon Canada's premiere National Junior Series has concluded. Congratulations to Victoria's Des Ridenour, ranked 1st overall, and Brennen Smith, 3rd overall, both named to the National Team competing in the 2016 World Championships in Cancun, Mexico.

TRIATHLON BC YOUTH & JUNIOR SUPER SERIES, INAUGURAL CHAMPIONS ANNOUNCED
Triathlon BC’s inaugural Youth and Junior Super Series concluded with the Vancouver Triathlon, September 6th. The premier draft legal series, consisting of four marque events, each hosting super sprint distance triathlons and catering to aspiring performance pathway Youth (14 – 15) and Junior (16 – 19) athletes, kicked off in late May with the North Shore Triathlon, culminating on Labour Day.

The second annual BC Youth Endurance Weekend will bring together teenage distance runners from around the Province to train, play, and hear an all-star group of Olympian speakers. The aims are to inspire and educate our next generation of endurance athletes.

HOMETOWN ATHLETES SYMONDS & ANNETT WIN PROVINCIAL & NATIONAL LONG DISTANCE TITLES
Be a part of history as Vancouver welcomes thousands of Masters-aged athletes to the first-ever Americas Masters Games, taking place August 26th to September 4th. A celebration on Jack Poole Plaza will kick off the Games with the Opening Ceremonies on August 27th. It is free to the public and will begin at 6 pm with a march of thousands of Masters Athletes representing 52 different countries, and will include music, entertainment and speeches from local politicians, representatives from the International Masters Games Association (IMGA), athletes, dignitaries and welcoming remarks from local First Nations elders. With the 2016 race season meeting its mid-mark, it's time to celebrate the 2016 Provincial Duathlon and Cross Triathlon Champions. Some were hard fought victories, while others were justified domination. Congratulations to each and every competitor that lined up to participate in the Championships.
Triathlon Canada is committed to selecting the highest performing team using clear selection methods, and in accordance with ITU entry criteria. The primary goal is to achieve podium performances. Triathlon Canada also aims to maximize the participation of elite athletes to represent Canada and to support their next steps towards future podium performances. deserving female athletes or clubs providing the financial support

DUNCAN TO HOST YOUTH & JUNIOR DRAFT CLINIC - JULY 2
Triathlon BC will be visiting Duncan on July 2 to host a Youth & Junior Draft Clinic. The clinic will take place at Cycle Therapy Bicycles and will be lead by Coach Steve Lund. As a former Canadian National Cycling Team and Canadian Olympic Triathlon Team Cycling Coach, Steve has been coaching full time since 1994. Many of Steve's athletes have represented their country at the Olympics, World Championships, Pan American Championships, World Cups and World Master's Championship events with numerous wins and podium finishes.

Triathlon over the weekend, the third stop in USAT's premiere junior race series. Congratulations to Michael Milic, Martin Sobey and Hamish Babin for sweeping the men's podium, and to Des Ridenour and Hannah Henry, 1st and 2nd, in the women's race!
HOT OFF THE PRESS! AMERICAS MASTERS GAMES RELEASE COURSE
The Sprint distance triathlon will be composed of a one loop 750m swim course, followed by a
one loop 20km bike ride and finished with a one loop 5km run, while the Standard distance triathlon will be composed of a two-loop 1500m swim, a two-loop 40km bike ride and followed by a two-loop 10km run.
Awards will be offered for men and women in the following categories for both the sprint and
standard race; 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-
89, 90+. Age categories for this event will be determined by your age as of December 31st, 2016

Because the 2016 National Championships (Standard distance) is a CAMTRI American Cup (Federation
of North, South and Central American countries) it is sanctioned by the International

FOUR BC ATHLETES SELECTED TO REPRESENT CANADA AT CAMTRI JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Triathlon Canada confirmed it will send eight junior boys and eight junior girls to take on the top juniors from North, South and Central America. As part of the 16 person squad, four BC based athletes will make the jump to Des Moines, Iowa, including three BC Games Alumni; Hannah Henry, Des Ridenour, Michael Milic and Saskatchewan transplant, Brennen Smith.

Recognizing the outstanding work Devo has done with their cycling program, Triathlon BC is joining forces with the esteemed program in delivering the inaugural Endurance Camp, a multi-day sports camp aimed at kids between 10 and 13 years of age.
With an underlying emphasis on fun, the Camp will introduce kids to three lifetime sports; cycling, running, and swimming, while also focusing on developing an understanding of nutrition, sportsmanship, making safe decisions and maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle through sport. In August 2017, the world will descend on Penticton to take part in the inaugural ITU World Multisport Championships. In order to participate, athletes must be members of a provincial triathlon association (like Triathlon BC!), and qualify at select events across Canada. The Age-Group Team Manager is a leadership position with the overall responsibility of the Event Support Team, including coaches and support personnel. The Team Manager will lead the Team Canada Event Support Team and have overall responsibility for on the ground team operations at the ITU Triathlon World Championships. With the recent news about disc brake use in the professional cycling peloton, and the subsequent ruling by the world governing body or cycling (UCI), Triathlon BC's position on disc brake use in provincially sanctioned events is listed below.
(iv) In Triathlon BC sanctioned races, with the exception of Age Group Provincial Championships and Elite, U23, Junior and Youth Competitions, and races used to select members for Provincial or Canadian Teams, disc brakes are permitted.

AGE GROUP DRAFT LEGAL EQUIPMENT OVERVIEW
As of 2016, sprint triathlon and duathlon age group World Championships will become draft legal events. What does that mean in terms of equipment? Click HERE to view a summary card of equipment legality.
Both road and time trial bicycles, homologated by the UCI are allowed, but note, all bikes MUST be fitted with standard drop bars only. Clip on bars, and bull moose style bars not not permitted.
Note: athletes from different age categories may draft off each other.
Athletes of the opposite gender may not.
RESEARCH STUDY REQUIRES INPUT FROM JUNIOR ATHLETES
A researcher from the University of PEI aims to examine the relationship between negative sport experiences and positive youth development among approximately 100 youth sport participants aged 16-19 years, from different sports and competitive levels. All individuals within this age range will be eligible for inclusion in the study. Participants will be required to complete five online questionnaires. The City of Penticton has won a bid to host the first ever ITU
Multisport World Championships Festival. The 10-day event, to be held in
August 2017, will see 5,000 athletes compete in four separate World
Championships: duathlon, aquathlon, cross triathlon and the coveted

ADULT LEARN TO DRAFT CLINICS - DATE SET!
The world governing body, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) has announced that, as of 2016, sprint triathlon and duathlon age group World Championships will become draft legal events. The planned changes do not affect standard distance or local, provincial-level competitions. While formal draft legal certification is not required for adults, possessing competent on-bike group riding skills are a prerequisite to a safe and enjoyable experience for all athletes. ATHLETE BURSARIES - NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS - NOTE - DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 14
BC continues to recognize outstanding athletes in our sport community.
Through two Bursaries aimed at developing triathletes, the Marc Duncan
and Mary Leliveld Bursaries offer small financial awards to offset the
cost of training and racing.
Mary Leliveld loved amateur athletics. She was a competitive runner, cyclist, triathlete who competed for Canada on the Canadian National Triathlon team at the World Triathlon Championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004. In addition to being a top age group athlete, she inspired others to achieve their dreams through sport.
One of the ways her friends and family hope to honor Mary's life is with a bursary fund. The directive of the Mary Leliveld Fund is to support deserving athletes travel to competitions they otherwise might not be able to participate in. To learn more about the Mary Leliveld Fund, please click HERE.
Marc was a troubled teen who was taken under the wing of a BC couple and introduced to triathlon. He became an outstanding junior triathlete who represented Canada at the 1991 World Triathlon Championships in Australia. Tragically, he was killed in a house fire two years later. His coach and mentor, Todd Clark, along with many of his training partners and friends asked Triathlon BC to establish a fund in his name to assist other junior athletes in financial need to meet their sport goals. 2015/16 ATHLETE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FUNDING NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
The Athlete Assistance Program (AAP) is an athlete-centred program offering financial assistance to recognized high performance athletes that have demonstrated the potential and commitment to excellence. The program seeks to relieve the pressures associated with training and competition needs when participating in provincial, national and international sports events. The AAP awards select athletes with funding between $500 and $3,500 each year.

At the end of 2015, Triathlon Canada undertook an extensive
examination of the Multisport International Competition Card (ICC)
qualification criteria as well as the selection process for the 2016 and
2017 ITU World Championship Elite Multisport teams. As a result, the Canadian Elite International Competition Card qualifying criteria for Long Course Triathlon, Cross Triathlon,
Duathlon, and Sprint Duathlon will be changed for 2017, and will be
enforced among all new applicants in 2017 and for existing card
holders. The changes are reflective of current standards accomplished
by elite/professional athletes and are aligned with other countries

This month Triathlon BC is featuring the TriMonsters Youth Triathlon and Cycling Team out of the North Okanagan region. The club was formed by Laura Medcalf, trains youth athletes ages 6-18 and is based out of the Vernon area. Click here to read more about this club.

Triathlon BC has been made aware of allegations against a provincial athlete’s conduct while participating in sanctioned events in BC. As a direct result of an extensive review performed by Triathlon Canada's Disciplinary Committee, in addition to a Triathlon BC-led investigation, a sanction has been placed against this athlete.
Effective November 1, 2015, Julie Miller is banned from any event sanctioned by Triathlon Canada and its
member organizations for a period of two years.

FUNDING ALERT – NANAIMO TOURISM TO HELP WITH SPORT EVENTS
Tourism Nanaimo is looking to work with community sport organizations to attract visitors to the city and has a budget of $20,000 annually to assist groups hosting sporting events and tournaments. Grants are primarily intended to support sport organizations hosting smaller-scale events at a local, regional and inter-regional level.

MASTERS ATHLETE HEART HEALTH TESTS VISIT VICTORIA & KELOWNA
Athletes over 35 years old, involved in recreational sport at a moderate to vigorous intensity level at least 3 times per week, or participate in competitive aerobic-based sports are invited to under go testing to evaluate their cardiovascular health. The testing will also help to determine the prevalence of atrial fibrillation in the masters athlete, and its association with the intensity of sport and volume of lifetime physical activity. On August 1st, Triathlon Canada hosted the 2015 Hall of Fame Dinner in downtown Toronto. Three inductees included Victoria's Lance Watson of LifeSport Coaching, 18-time Ironman winner and Ironman world champion Heather Fuhr and two-time Ironman world champion Lori Bowden, also residing in Victoria.. The event also honoured five community builders including Phillip Adsetts, Julien Hutchinson, and race directors and pioneers Graham and Sue Fraser. Simon Whitfield was awarded the C3 Life Time Award for his work as an athlete and an ambassador for the sport. On behalf of Triathlon BC, a hearty hat tip to all of these individuals.

ATHLETE DEATH AT PROVINCIALLY SANCTIONED EVENT
Triathlon BC is extremely saddened to learn of the death of a Calgary-based athlete who passed away while competing at a provincially sanctioned event. Our deepest condolences are extended to family and friends, and an appreciation of note to the emergency workers that tended to the individual so quickly.

WESTERN CANADA GAMES TEAM ANNOUNCED
After nine months, three training camps and two selection events, Triathlon BC has selected six young athletes to represent British Columbia at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games, taking place in Wood Buffalo, Alberta, from August 11th through to the 16th.
BC Team athletes enter the Games on a remarkable run of success, with four of the six selected male and female athletes finishing in the top five, together with an outright win in the relay event at the opening round of Triathlon Canada’s Junior National Series.

KELOWNA SPORT GRANTS
The City of Kelowna recognizes the need for financial aid to support the competition, education and event hosting needs of the Kelowna-based sport community. In response, the following community sport grants have been established:
Community Sport Delivery Grant supports the staffing needs (i.e. Head Coach, Administrator) of Local Sport Organizations and assist in the delivery of local sport participation and performance initiatives. This grant will fund paid positions to ensure the provision of a wide range of programs and services to athletes, coaches, and volunteers from the grassroots to competitive levels that align with the Canadian Sport For Life (CS4L) Model.
Sport Education Grant supported by the Kelowna 2008 BC Summer Games Legacy Fund, this grant designed to provide financial assistance to local coaches or officials interested in upgrading their training and/or certification beyond introductory levels. The Grant can also be used for local sport organizations to host advanced sport development courses/seminars for local coaches and officials.
Sport Event Grant provides financial support to local community sporting organizations hosting a sporting event in Kelowna. It is intended that this fund will provide the stimulus and seed money to assist non-profit organizations to bid, host, create, market and administer new sports-based events.
Athletic Excellence Grant has been established to assist high performance athletes or teams with the travel-related expenses associated with participating in high-level sporting events such as provincial or national championships
KidSportTM Grant is a community based sport-funding program established in
1993 by Sport BC. KidSport™ provides grants for children ages 6 – 18 to
participate in a sport season of their choice.

Embracing the country’s winter roots, Triathlon Canada and Quebec Triathlon are partnering to host the inaugural Canadian S3 Winter Triathlon Championship in Quebec City on Sunday, February 8, 2015. The 25-kilometre, three-pronged event is sanctioned by the ITU and boasts an $8,000 purse for the top-five men’s and women’s finishers. The Athlete Assistance Program is an athlete-centred program offering financial assistance to recognized high performance athletes that have demonstrated the potential and commitment to excellence. The program seeks to relieve the pressures associated with training and competition needs when participating in provincial, national and international sports events.

2015 WESTERN CANADA SUMMER GAMES ATHLETE SELECTION CRITERIA
The Western Canada Summer Games (WCSG) Athlete Selection Criteria has been created to ensure the most competitive BC Team, consisting of three (3) male and three (3) female athletes, represents British Columbia in the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games, a Team capable of achieving podium performances in both the individual sprint and team relay events. It is the BC Team’s objective to place at least one male and one female athlete on the podium in the individual competition, and place each sprint-relay Team on the podium.
