Researchers in the School of Health and Exercise Sciences at UBCO are interested in understanding how the body adapts and responds to endurance exercise training. Although we know that competitive athletes are “fitter and healthier” than individuals who don’t exercise, and that the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of athletes are more highly developed, we know surprisingly little about the time course of how the body actually adapts or responds to exercise training over time.
Researchers are looking for 40 individuals that:
- Want to accomplish a “bucket-list” challenge
- Currently perform less than 120 minutes of endurance training per week but are otherwise healthy
- Are between the ages of 19 and 39
- Can commit to a 12 month training program commencing August 2024
- Can commit to 5 lab-based physiological/performance testing blocks throughout the year (1 – 2 visits to UBCO lab/block)
- Are willing and able to supply your own gear (e.g. road bike, wetsuit, running shoes, gym/pool membership etc.)
- Are able to swim greater than 100 meters without stopping
Participants involved in the study will receive:
- Individualized 12 month daily training program
- Expert athlete monitoring, coaching and feedback
- Frequent exercise and performance testing
- Regular physiological and health assessments
- Access to a friendly and supportive community to share your journey with
