Project 2024

Project 2024 was born in late 2015, built around the need to provide performance pathway athletes, between the ages of 13 and 23, with an opportunity to participate in a competitive, draft legal environment, with the very real possibility of spring-boarding athletes onto Triathlon Canada’s National Development Team.

Continuing the momentum established throughout the Series’ history, Triathlon BC has designated five marquee events as part of the 2023 BC SuperSeries.  Internally known as Project 2024, the umbrella theme of the Series is to produce athletes capable of major national and international podiums by the year 2024.

Because the Junior, U23, Elite World Championships and Olympic Triathlon are all draft-legal events, Triathlon BC’s SuperSeries events are also draft legal competitions, providing young athletes with an opportunity to develop the skills necessary for international-caliber racing as they progress on to the National Development Series and climb the National Performance Pathway.

SuperSeries Executive Summary

With a focus on speed and technical skill, Triathlon BC’s SuperSeries events are Super Sprint Triathlons, comprised of a 400 meter swim, a 10 kilometer bike, and a 2.5 kilometer run, together with a handful of single sport time trails to maximize the exposure to a high performance environment. Take note, some allowances to distances are permitted to accommodate different venues and locations.  The swim can take place in a pool or have a beach start. The bike and run courses are typically (but not always) multi-lap affairs. As with any triathlon, distances may vary slightly from venue to venue to accommodate the specific needs of each course.

In order to build a competitive atmosphere with a critical mass of athletes, Triathlon BC’s Race Series events combine the usual elements of a triathlon with the additional excitement of draft-legal racing. These events must respect Triathlon Canada’s age-appropriate distance regulations. With up to three distinct age groups (U15, Junior, U23) competing in the Series, super sprint distances must be followed.

National Sport Trust Fund (NSTF)

Triathlon BC’s Pool to Podium program has been created to bring high performance athletes from a provincial level to an international performance standard. These athletes have been identified as meeting and/or exceeding strict eligibility criteria. It brings together top tier athlete support, advanced coaching, intensive training, and international caliber competition opportunities. Donations made to the Pool to Podium program will be used to offset the cost of facility rentals, routine health and wellness screening, physiological testing and assessment, training, travel and cost of competitions for developing young athletes on the cusp of making our National Team.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHERE DOES THE SERIES FIT IN CANADA’S LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT SPECTRUM?

Young athletes participating in Triathlon BC's SuperSeries, have self-identified as being on the performance pathway. At this stage of development (Train to Train), athletes are ready to consolidate basic skills and focus more time on training and physical development over competition, a critical step to top performers. For more advanced racers that have selected to pursue triathlon (Train to Compete) with the hope of competing abroad, the Series serves as a spring board to Triathlon Canada's National Series.

HOW DO I REGISTER AS A ATHLETE REPRESENTING A POST SECONDARY INSTITUTION?

Athletes register directly with the event they would like to register in, however, post-secondary athletes, vying for University Series points, MUST include their school's name in the appropriate registration field.

WHAT DOES “DRAFT-LEGAL” MEAN?

During a draft-legal triathlon, athletes draft, or 'tuck in' behind other athletes to save energy. This is often referred to as riding in a “pack” or “peloton.” Not unlike pelotons seen at the Tour de France, drafting requires increased bike handling skills. Under International Triathlon Union's (ITU) age group regulations, drafting would normally result in a penalty, however, in a draft legal environment , there is no penalty for drafting. Drafting in triathlon adds another dimension to race tactics and skill, and is seen at the International World Triathlon Series and Olympic level.

DO I NEED DRAFT LEGAL CERTIFICATION PRIOR TO COMPETING?

Yes! Triathlon BC hosts a series of draft legal clinics through the year, where athletes can have their skills fine tuned and evaluated. Upon successful evaluation by a recognized coach, an athlete earns a draft legal certificate, and appears on Triathlon BC's list of eligible athletes. Athletes working with accredited coaches can also gain accreditation from their coaches. Upcoming Camps and Clinics are listed on our Clinics page.

HOW OLD MUST I BE TO COMPETE?

Triathlon BC's Race Series is open to eligible* Youth athletes (age 13 and 15), Junior athletes (aged 16 to 19), U23 athletes (aged 20 - 23) as of December 31st of the competition year, in addition to athletes enrolled in post secondary institutions . University students and U23 athletes compete with Junior competitors. In 2022, the University and U23 category are a demonstration series only.

*Eligible - must have draft certification.

CAN AN ATHLETE “RACE UP” IN AN AGE CATEGORY?

No. Under Triathlon Canada regulations, athletes must compete according to their racing age as of December 31st of the competition year.

DO I NEED TO BE ON A HIGH PERFORMANCE TEAM TO COMPETE?

No. While there are several development Clubs around the province that focus on preparing athletes for the rigours of draft legal competition, being a member of a performance club is not required.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR THESE EVENTS?

Registration is handled directly by the local organizing committee (LOC). Because many Triathlon BC SuperSeries powered by Argon 18 events are held in conjunction with age group races, be certain that you are registering for the SuperSeries powered by Argon 18 event. Please contact the event organizer if you have a registration question.

DO I NEED A TRIATHLON BC MEMBERSHIP TO COMPETE?

Yes. All SuperSeries athletes must hold an active Triathlon BC, or an affiliate Provincial membership AND provide confirmation of draft legal certification prior to competition to earn points and be included in the Series standings.

WHAT TYPE OF BIKE DO I NEED IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE?

Triathlon BC SuperSeries athletes must compete on a traditional road bike, with drop bars and, where elected, draft legal aerobars. Triathlon, time-trial type or mountain bikes are not eligible for competition. Please refer to our downloadable Series Summary for full details.

CAN MY BIKE HAVE DISC BRAKES?

Yes. Disc brakes are allowed (2018 ITU Competition Rules 5.2 i.) (i) pg 39) in SuperSeries competition.

CAN PARENTS ASSIST THEIR CHILDREN IN THE TRANSITION AREA?

No. Because Triathlon BC's SuperSeries is performance oriented, parents and coaches are not allowed inside the transition area before, during, or after the event.

HOW DO SERIES POINTS RANKING WORK?
